Bamboo Furniture How
- Furniture made either from, or in imitation of, bamboo. It was popular during the vogue for CHINOISERIE in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, usually crafted in strong woods such as beech and then turned, curved and painted to imitate real bamboo.

Ethiopia. Arba Minch.
Dorze village.
The Dorze are a small ethnic group in Ethiopia who speak a language in the Omotic family. Numbering approximately 28,000, they live primarily in the southern region of the country, though some have migrated to Addis Ababa and other regions. Many Dorze live in villages near the cities of Chencha and Arba Minch, which are located in the Semien Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region (formerly in the Gamu-Gofa province). Weaving is a primary profession for many Dorze.
About 1 hour up the mountain road from Arba is the Dorze Village of Chincha.
It is a real village, but set up like a working museum, with a tour, demonstrations of local cooking etc.
You get to see how the Dorze live, making use of everything they grow with no waste. Even the animals are used to heat the homes. Probably the most noteworthy factoid about this area is the housing, built to resemble the elephants that once roamed freely in the area. They are constructed from bamboo and the roofing material is from the large leaves of the 'false' banana tree and local grass. The door resembles the trunk of an elephant, and the two eyes are the ventilation system and chimney. These 'bee hive' shaped homes stand close to 11 meters tall when first constructed, with a circular base of about 6 meters in diamater. There is no permanent foundation for the dwelling, over the passing years, as the base of the home decays, it is lifted, re-cut, and then placed on the ground
Dining room
The dining room chairs are slip-covered, to protect against cat hair, but our dining room is (almost) all done. I still need to touch up some paint where we removed the heavy formal drapes from the windows. The swinging butler door has been recut to accomodate our new bamboo flooring in the adjoining kitchen. I am so pleased with how it's shaping up.
